On July 12, 2022, the Götheborg of Sweden embarked on its Asia Expedition 2022/2023 to China. The Chinese Ambassador to Sweden, Cui Aimin, offered his best wishes as the ship departed from the Ports of Stockholm.
Ambassador Cui reflected on the historical significance of Götheborg’s first voyage to China in 1739, which marked the beginning of nearly 300 years of friendly exchanges between China and Sweden. This journey established the China-Sweden maritime Silk Road. It contributed to the growth and prosperity of Gothenburg and Sweden, becoming a symbol of the enduring cooperation and deep friendship between the two nations. The Götheborg was meticulously rebuilt in the 1990s to mirror the original vessel. Its voyage to China in 2005 was a landmark event, further strengthening the bond between the two countries.
Cui noted that today’s China-Sweden relations are more robust and diverse, extending beyond traditional trade to include cooperation in communications, medicine, finance, transportation, and green energy. Last year, bilateral trade reached a record $20.9 billion. The current trip of Götheborg to China will not only revisit historical ties and reinforce friendships but also explore new avenues for practical cooperation and promote cultural and trade connections. Cui wished the Götheborg a successful and safe voyage.
Lars G. Malmer, Chairman of Svenska Ostindiska Companies, expressed gratitude for the ambassador’s warm wishes. He emphasized that the Götheborg symbolises Swedish-Chinese friendship, promoting cooperation in business, trade, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Malmer recalled the ship’s visit to Guangzhou in 2006 and highlighted how it underscores Sweden’s commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation with China. He hoped for the continued growth of bilateral relations and a safe journey for Götheborg.
The original Götheborg was a renowned Swedish merchant ship of the 18th century, making three voyages to Guangzhou, China, between 1739 and 1745. In 1995, a replica was constructed in Sweden, and it first sailed to China in 2005. Now, 17 years later, the Götheborg has set out again, expected to reach Shanghai by September 2023.
The departure event was attended by Stephan Bjork, Chairman of the Greencarrier Group, Johannes Jemdahl, President of Greencarrier, and representatives from the crew and sailors on board.
